Henrik Kauffmann es el embajador danés en Washington en 1939. Al comenzar la II Guerra Mundial la situación se vuelve crítica, sobre todo después de que las tropas alemanas invadan y ocupen Dinamarca. En ese momento, Kauffmann toma una decisión crucial en la historia: declararse el único representante verdadero de una Dinamarca libre en oposición a los nazis.
